Caring For Capricorn: Week Three

Doshas for Capricorn: Kapha and Vata

Caring for the Kapha Dosha: Kapha represents the ability to be stable and have form and strength. In addition, Kapha is responsible for maintaining moisture levels in the body. The main sites of Kapha in the body are:

The Mind: When balanced, Kapha protects the mind and thoughts are clear. When unbalanced, the mind becomes dull and sluggish; in this situation, avoid excessive sleep and find activities that stimulate the mind.

The Mouth and Tongue: Kapha is responsible for creating the correct amount of lubrication in the mouth and throat, allowing the taste buds to perform well. Unbalanced, there can be excessive saliva and mucous. *

The Chest, Heart, and Lungs: Keeping the correct lubrication in these areas is crucial to health. Respiratory conditions can create excessive mucous in the lungs. The heart connection is related to attachment and grief. Letting go of things physically and emotionally is helpful. *

The Joints: When joints are healthy, we move with ease; when unbalanced, they can swell and cause pain with movement. *

The Stomach: Balanced Kapha provides protection from excess acid in the stomach; when unbalanced, there can be excess mucous, nausea, and sluggish digestion. *

Caring for the Vata Dosha: Vata represents the ability to move with lightness and ease. Vata is responsible for maintaining movement in the body. The main sites of Vata in the body are:

The Mind: Vata governs the intake of life force and has to do with thoughts and breath. What we take into our bodies through the senses will reflect the state of Vata. When balanced, our breath is deep and restorative, and our thoughts are clear. When unbalanced thoughts are excessive and disturbed, causing anxiety and shallow, irregular breathing. Being mindful of mental and physical intake through breathing practices and a way of eating that pacifies Vata. *

The Throat and Chest: Vata is responsible for creating speech and exhalation. This is the part of Vata that expresses our life force. What we take into our mind is now expressed in our body. If the intake through the mind is balanced, what comes out of our mouth will sound life-giving. The voice will be beautiful, and the breath will support expression. If unbalanced, speech will sound shallow, breathless, fast, and unfocused. Using the voice to sing beautiful sounds is helpful. *

The Heart: Responsible for circulation in the heart area and governs all circulation in the body, including nerve energy and moving sweat out of the body. When balanced, the body operates optimally. When unbalanced, there will be little to no sweat resulting in dry skin and abnormal movements such as tremors can be present. Management of the five senses and allowing the flow of nature will restore balance.

The Small Intestine: This is where Vata is responsible for absorption. The work of the small intestine is to absorb vital nutrients from food and carries them into the blood. Vata is directly related to digestion as it is responsible for stoking the digestive fire. When balanced, digestion is efficient. When unbalanced, digestion becomes disturbed and can produce malnourishment, weight loss/gain and alternating constipation/diarrhea. The spiritual connection is the absorption of all intakes, and therefore lifestyle routines that reduce the intake of stress will have a positive impact. *

The Lower Abdomen: Here, Vata is responsible for removing menstrual blood, feces, and urine and the mental waste produced by information intake. When balanced elimination is regular. When unbalanced elimination becomes disturbed, manifesting in irregular urination, menstruation, constipation, and/or diarrhea, The spiritual connection includes the mental waste produced by the intake of toxic information. Therefore, reduce exposure to toxic information, spend time in silence, and cultivate clear thinking. *

Specific parts of the body associated with Capricorn: Bones, Joints, Knees. When balanced there will be ease of movement in the body. When unbalanced there will be tendencies for weakness in the bones, knees or knee injuries, also arthritis in the knees. Be aware and take extra care in these areas. Managing Kapha and Vata will help.

General daily care for all: If you are not already doing this, add to your routine Eyewashing, Tongue Scraping, Neti, and Abhyanga. This will clear your head to see more clearly with your physical and non-physical eyes. In addition, food will taste better, you will have a fresher feeling mouth, and breathe better, which is everything. The Abhyanga is an entire body treatment. These benefits alone are so profound, and they are simple to do. *

PLACES: Forests, River Deltas, Rivers, Tribal Communities.

Color: All the colors of the Earth, Water and Air in a variegated and spotty design.

Essential Oils: Clary Sage, Chamomile, Lavender, Cardamom, Bergamot, Ginger, Jasmine, Petigrain, Rosemary, Basil, Rose, Neroli, Sandalwood. Grab one or more of these gorgeous aromas and use it to scent yourself, your home, or both*

Herbs: This experiential course focuses on nourishing the body's deepest tissues, where the center of creativity lives. The three-body systems we are working with are the Nervous, Digestive and Reproductive; from these, I have selected a few Sattvic herbs to enhance your experience. These are generally safe herbs; however, please do your own research to determine if they are right for you. The first herb I would like to highlight is a beautiful mind tonic called Brahmi. Gently stimulating and soothing all at once; with Brahmi, you can direct your mind in a very effective beneficial way bringing focus while at the same time not becoming overstimulated, so it's an exquisite balancer and the ultimate way to bring balance to people of all constitutions. Ashwagandha is an aphrodisiac, an adaptogen, and a rejuvenative; it increases Ojas, improves sleep, and supports your artistic expression. Shatavari is an aphrodisiac that increases strength, rejuvenates the reproductive system, soothes the mind, and allows you to tap into your creation system. Another of my favorites for Capricorn is the digestive combination called Trikatu; perfect for sluggish digestion, a common imbalance for Capricorn because of Kapha in the digestive tract; however, Trikatu is heating, and can be too drying for Vata the lower digestive tract, which could show up as constipation. *

Foods: As a Capricorn Ascendant, your digestive system combines Kapha and Vata. It is essential to keep your diet light most of the time. A 70/30 approach would suit you well. 70 percent of your plate is light seasonal food low in fat and grains with lots of vegetables and fruits; 30 percent of your plate, is a combination of healthy fats, grains, and sweets. Capricorn is very disciplined in all areas of life, including food, be sure to not get so strict that you forget to enjoy eating. Following the Ayurvedic food guidelines will help. Avoid the diet trap if you are in good health. True alchemy happens in your body when you feel nourished on every level of your being; this includes food and nourishment from love which connects you with your dharma to make your life a work of art. If your digestion becomes unbalanced, you will notice sluggish digestion, nausea, and constipation. You can use a Kapha/Vata pacifying diet. *

Spices: A few of many; Basil, Ginger-Dried or fresh, Black Pepper, Cloves, Coriander, Cumin, Cinnamon, Fenugreek, Mint, Mustard Seed, Nutmeg, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Star Anise, Thyme, Turmeric. *

Movement: Because there are three elements involved, Capricorn movement is a combination; for the Earth element, faster-moving work that produces sweat is optimal. For the Water element swim in living water if possible. For the Air element, grounding work such as yoga asanas done in a seated or lying down position. Be mindful not to go to extremes. The middle path is your zone in all areas of life. *
