Doshas for Aquarius: Vata & Kapha

Caring For Vata Dosha: Vata represents the ability to move with lightness and ease. Vata is responsible for maintaining movement in the body. The main sites of Vata in the body are:

The Mind: Vata governs the intake of life force and has to do with thoughts and breath. What we take into our bodies through the senses will reflect the state of Vata. When balanced, our breath is deep, restorative, and our thoughts are clear. When unbalanced thoughts are excessive and disturbed, causing anxiety and shallow, irregular breathing. Being mindful of mental and physical intake through breathing practices and a way of eating that pacifies Vata.

The Throat and Chest: Vata is responsible for creating speech and exhalation. This is the part of Vata that represents our life force. What we take into our minds is now expressed in our bodies. If the intake through the mind is balanced, what comes out of our mouth will sound life-giving. The voice will be beautiful, and the breath will support expression. If unbalanced, speech will sound shallow, breathless, fast, and unfocused. Breathing practices and using the voice to sing beautiful sounds is helpful.

The Heart: Keeping the correct circulation in the heart area and thought to govern all circulation in the body, including nerve energy and moving sweat out of the body. When balanced, the body operates optimally. There can be very little sweat when unbalanced, and skin will be dry. Abnormal movements such as tremors can be present. Management of the five senses and allowing the flow of nature will restore balance.

The Small Intestine: This is where Vata is responsible for absorption. The work of the small intestine is to absorb vital nutrients from food and carries them into the blood. Vata is related to digestion as it is responsible for stoking the digestive fire. When balanced, digestion is efficient. When unbalanced, digestion becomes disturbed and can produce malnourishment, weight loss, and alternating constipation/diarrhea. The spiritual connection is the absorption of all intakes, and therefore lifestyle routines that reduce the intake of stress will have a positive impact.

Elimination: Here, Vata is responsible for removing menstrual blood, feces, and urine and the mental waste from the intake of information. When balanced elimination is regular. When unbalanced elimination becomes disturbed, manifesting in irregular urination, menstruation, constipation, and/or diarrhea, The spiritual connection includes the mental waste produced by the intake of toxic information. Therefore, reduce exposure to mental toxins, spend time in silence, and cultivate clear thinking.

Caring for Kapha: Kapha represents the ability to be stable and have form and strength. Kapha is responsible for maintaining moisture levels in the body. This is to familiarize you with the sites of Kapha in the body and in no way is meant to replace medical advice. If you feel you have imbalances in these areas, a full consultation is recommended. The main sites of Kapha in the body are:

The Mind: Kapha protects the mind when balanced and thoughts are clear. When unbalanced, the mind becomes dull and sluggish; in this situation, avoid excessive sleep and find activities that stimulate the mind.

The Mouth and Tongue: Kapha is responsible for creating the correct amount of lubrication in the mouth and throat, allowing the taste buds to perform well. Unbalanced, there can be excessive saliva and mucous. Consult an Ayurvedic Practitioner for the correct diet and herbs.

The Chest, Heart, and Lungs: Keeping the correct lubrication in these areas is crucial to health. Respiratory conditions can create excessive mucous in the lungs. The heart connection is related to attachment and grief. Letting go of things physically and emotionally is helpful.

The Joints: When joints are healthy, we don't notice them; when unbalanced, they can swell and cause pain with movement.

The Stomach: Balanced Kapha provides protection from excess acid in the stomach; when unbalanced, there can be excess mucous, nausea, and sluggish digestion.

Specific parts of the body associated with Aquarius: Power of exhalation, Skin, Calves. See the description above (Vata in the throat and chest) for more on exhalation. Pay special attention to the skin; skin brushing, daily Abhyanga, staying hydrated are all helpful. Calves; daily care of calves with stretching and movement. When unbalanced there will be shallow breath, circulation issues, nervous system issues, dryness and other skin issues, pain in the lower legs. Be aware and take extra care in these areas. Managing Vata and Kapha will help.

Times of Day:

Prepare for the day with planning and movement 6-10 am

Do most analytical work 10am-2pm

Creative work 2-6pm, exercise can also be done

Wind down 6-9pm, very light, relaxing movement can be done

It may be helpful to write down all your activities and times you do them for a week to see if your current schedule resembles this and to prompt any creative changes you would like to bring.

General daily care for all: If you are not already doing this, add to your routine Eye washing, Tongue Scraping, Neti, and Abhyanga. This will clear your head allowing you to see with your physical and non-physical eyes. In addition, food will taste better, you will have a fresher feeling mouth, and breathe better, which is everything. Finally, Abhyanga is an entire body treatment that envelops you in love and nourishment while beautifying and fortifying your skin.

Essential Oils: Lavender, Rose, Jasmine, Jatamansi, Clary Sage, Orange, Petitgrain, Bergamot, Rosemary, Cardamom, Ylang Ylang, Chamomile, Basil, Frankincense, Neroli. Grab one or more of these gorgeous aromas and use them to scent your surroundings.

Herbs and Flowers: I am keeping it simple by recommending a few outstanding herbs that work with the mind, creative, and digestive, systems activated in this course. In a general sense, these will help balance all body systems and are generally safe; however, please do your own research to determine if they are right for you.

1. Brahmi: A beautiful mind tonic that is gently stimulating and soothing all at once. With Brahmi, you can direct your mind in a very effective beneficial way and focus on what it is you are trying to do while at the same time not becoming overstimulated, so it's an exquisite balancer and the ultimate way to bring balance to people of all constitutions.

2. Culinary Rose Petals: An aphrodisiac that stimulates desire and will support you in your artistic expression.

3 & 4. Shatavari and Ashwagandha: Adaptogens and Aphrodisiacs that rejuvenate the reproductive system and support your creation (reproductive) system.

Foods: My general food recommendations are to consume organic, seasonal, fresh, unprocessed food. However, it is essential to know the type of digestive system you have so you can quickly self-correct when you notice an imbalance. As an Aquarius Ascendant, your digestive system combines Vata and Kapha. To maintain balance, keep your diet moist and warm most of the time. Satisfy your sweet tooth with dried or cooked fruits. Most of the time, avoid cold and raw foods because they will tend to irritate your sensitive stomach. Use dairy sparingly. If you eat meat, do so only a few times each week. Avoid overly starchy grains favoring whole grains prepared well. If you approach this with a healthy attitude and cultivate eating habits that are genuinely nourishing, you will avoid the pitfalls of misuse of foods that leave you undernourished.

I highly recommend following the Ayurvedic food guidelines and avoiding the diet trap if you are in good health. True alchemy happens in your body when you feel nourished on every level of your being; this includes food and nourishment from love which connects you with your dharma to make your life a work of art. However, if your digestion becomes unbalanced, you will notice constipation and gas, leading to systemic dryness in the body and an overall feeling of being cold and fatigued. At this point, choose a Vata/Kapha pacifying diet. You will find a few book recommendations on the supply list page.

Spices: I'll mention a few, Basil, Ginger-Dried, Black Pepper, Cloves, Coriander, Cinnamon, Fennel, Mint, Mustard Seed, Nutmeg, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Turmeric.

Movement: Because Vata is the force of motion in the body, it is helpful to minimize vigorous exercise and do plenty of rejuvenation and restoration, such as lying down in silence for 20 minutes a day or Yoga Nidra. Kapha needs the stimulation of fast movement that causes sweating. In Aquarius I recommend using a far infrared sauna for sweating and cardio. Aquarius is unique in that the same planet rules the 1st and 12th house; 12th house is sleep and 1st house is active so Aquarians can always have a bit of systemic fatigue which would be aggravated by regular cardio activity. 3-5 times a week in a far infrared sauna will provide what is needed.
